Here at Octane Coffee we have recently discovered the New York Times Bestseller “Stuff White People Like,” a demographic study with an irreverent title and a snarky undertone written by Christian Lander.

Chapter One is none other than about coffee and the statement that “white people love coffee” and all sorts of espresso-based beverages. It continues with the observation that while all cultures enjoy a cup of coffee, white people are more emphatic about cultivating a taste for it at a young age, which then evolves into a perceived addiction. And, Lander continues, white men rarely call it by it’s simple name, but instead refer to it as “java,” “joe,” “black gold,” or our personal favorite here at Octane, “rocket fuel.”

We at www.useoctane.com, operators of the infamous Octane Coffee Airstream, know that the daily caffeinated jolt of goodness is fuel to many down here in LoDo and that’s how it got its name. According to Lander, where people buy their coffee is just as important as the beverage they buy, explaining why it is that people frequent multinational chains like Starbucks while claiming to despise them. “This hatred is often sublimated by their relief at seeing one in an airport,” says Lander.

Octane Coffee fits right into this desire to support locally-owned coffee shops. Not only is Octane owned and operated by Denver natives, it is headquartered inside a symbol of traditional Americana, a 1962 Kerouac-esteemed Globetrotter airstream trailer. If you think you get your daily motivation from your latte, this will add an extra shot of inspiration.

While we’re on the subject of “Stuff White People Like,” we’d like to announce that we will be traveling to Farmer’s Markets all summer long. Every Saturday at the Cherry Creek Farmers Market (by Bed, Bath & Beyond) and every Sunday at Stapleton Farmers Market.

Lander insists that white people like farmer’s markets because they feel a need to support small business (check), it’s outside so people can bring dogs (check, we have complimentary dog biscuits) and it’s a great place to meet people passionate about sustainability (that’s us-the truck pulling the trailer is a Flex Fuel vehicle that has the option to run on E85, 85% ethanol fuel).

Fuel up with us at www.useoctane.com at farmers markets and at the corner of Larimer and Broadway Monday through Friday.

It may have a cute picture and a clever name, but why is everyone so amused by the Fail Whale? When Twitter is over capacity, an icon of a whale being lifted out of the ocean in a net carried by birds appears. What does this symbolize exactly? It isn’t certain, but it could be that the giant whale represents the number of users attempting to tweet at that time and the birds are the frail Twitter system struggling to hold up.

Go figure.

Whatever it is, it is telling you that you are a fish out of water. Wiki Answers reports there are more than 1,000,000 (that would be one million) Twitter users as compared to the more than 2,000,000 (million again) Facebookers.

Having frequented both sites, I have personally never been turned away from Facebook due to high activity the way I have on Twitter. But if this happens, Facebook certainly does not promote it.

According to CNN.com, the site crashes are becoming a regular occurrence and users are supposedly more entertained than annoyed. So much so that they are sporting t-shirts and other Fail Whale swag. One indicator of hitting the jackpot of fads is when trendsetters are so obsessed with your site that sending 3,000,000 (yes, that’s millions) tweets per day isn’t enough, they get a tattoo of the now iconic busy signal. There is no such thing as bad publicity, right?

My guess is that the strategy here is to emphasize the website’s popularity. CNN.com explains David Bill (mr_bill to Twitter) held a party that attracted 300 guests to celebrate the whale. Yiying Lu was of course in attendance. She is the Australian artist who created the Fail Whale as well as the Twitter bird icon that she originally sold to Twitter creators as a stock photo which sent her own career as an illustrator into orbit.

Next time you Twitter, follow UseOctane for the latest updates and discounts. And here’s a little secret: the Octane logo is actually tattoo-worthy. It combines coffee and flames. I don’t know if you’re looking for a new design, but I’m just saying.

Coffee is already the godsend to morning routines and now a new benefit has been discovered. The jolt of java reduces the pain of exertion accompanying exercising. It doesn’t matter if your caffeine habit is a new addition to your diet or if you’ve been drinking a pot per day for years, it affects the brain the same way.

According to a report by LiveScience, caffeine blocks the biochemical, adenosine, which aids in energy transfer during exercise resulting in less pain felt. The test was conducted by divided subjects into groups of those who consume caffeine regularly and those who don’t then asking both groups to exercise on a stationary bike for two increments of 30 minutes each. Before one test they took a tablet of caffeine and before the other, a placebo, then they recorded pain levels accordingly.

Health professor Robert Motl told LiveScience.com the benefit is that consuming caffeine before exercising may encourage people beginning new routines or looking to increase current routines to stick with it because it will be slightly easier.

The newly-exposed advantage is one of the reasons the Octane trailer relocated to Wash Park just in time for spring. Now that it’s warming up outside, exercisers can get out and run, walk or play sports in the park. The new fixture to Wash Park, the 1962 Airstream trailer where Octane coffee serves gourmet coffee and espresso beverages, will be open daily to give exercisers an on-site opportunity to get their caffeine kick so they will have more energy, less pain and the stamina to make their new exercise plan a staple in their regime.

The truck toting the Kerouac-esteemed Airstream is a Bi Fuel vehicle that runs on compressed natural gas (CNG).

Emissions with Compressed Natural Gas vehicles are reduced more than 70%. Natural Gas is created domestically, and pricing is controlled by the market (independent of monopolistic price setting mechanisms like OPEC). The reduced and less volatile pricing of Natural Gas allows Octane to pass the cost savings onto our customers.
